DC Smoking Ban

Thursday, January 5, 2006

smoking.jpgDC is notoriously unglamorous and prudish; the city is, as they say, a Hollywood for ugly people. And so, quite frankly, in a town where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Department of Justice lawyer, I'm surprised it's taken the local gub'ment bureaucrats so long to finally institute a smoking ban in all bars, clubs, and restaurants. It'll take effect on January 1, 2007. While libertarians and smokers decry state-sponsored encroachment on personal freedoms and antismoking activists celebrate the ban, the all-powerful Hookah Bar Owners contingency is breathing a deep, shisha-smoky sigh of relief at having escaped the ordinance. Only one question remains: How will DC, with its chronically anemic dating scene, respond to smirting?
