Buck's Fishing & Camping Photo Fracas
I'm a few days late and several dollars short on this 'un, but a recent incident involving the DCFoodies blog and new surf-and-turf temple Buck's Fishing and Camping bears mentioning. In the tiniest of nutshells: foodblogger takes a couple pics of his dish with a cellcam, and chef promptly goes ballistic (later causing a typo-laced C&D letter to wing its feathery way to the blog). You can read alls about l'affaire and the postmortem here, here, here, here, and here. This has a special, amusing, coincidental relevance, as I just assured one of our Gridskipper contributors that "nobody cares" if you take pictures of food in restaurants. It's the exception that proves the rule, I say! Frankly, despite whatever niceties of the law may apply, getting uptight about photography in restaurants is ridiculous. But maybe it would be OK with the chef and legally permissible to eat a fine meal at Buck's, go home, poop it out, take a photo of the feces, and send the portrait to the chef. I'd call that "fair use."
