Cow Books

06292006.7.jpgLast week's issue of Time magazine (Asian and European editions) had a piece I wrote for them on Cow Books, certainly one of the best bookstores Tokyo has to offer. They've actually become sort of a chain, with a main shop in the hip Nakameguro district (although I do get the feeling that the area's heyday is behind it), as well as smaller shop on the premises of the stylish Dragonfly Cafe in Aoyama (3-13-14-2F Minami-Aoyama), and they even have a bookmobile! The focus here is on rare and out-of-print works, but even if the countercultural offerings are not your thing, the shops themselves are well worth seeking out. The main store especially is especially striking, with a large table for browsing (or just resting) and an LED display that surrounds the room.
