Tango Season

tangofestival.jpgTango, it seems, has a season. Or at least the city of Buenos Aires says it does. Perhaps tango season is anytime but the summer high season, when everyone's at the beach and it's too hot anyway. For whatever motivation, the city tango season kicks off with the ninth annual Festival Buenos Aires Tango, from February 28-March 4, then reappears with the fifth annual Campeonato Metropolitano de Baile de Tango in May and June, then reaches its apex from August 16-26 with the fifth annual Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango. It may seem a little dweeby to hit one of these events, but as someone who's been I can vouch that the last of these, the world championship, is pretty amazing. Away from the overpriced tango shows and the tourist-choked Plaza Dorrego, these events host some superstars (and truly on the cheap: if I recall correctly, tickets cost 10 pesos, more or less).
