Bix Restaurant in San Fran
Bix Restaurant in San Fran's FiDi belongs to the same curious genus as NYC's Freeman's Alley: a semi-obscured back-alley gourmet. The outside of Bix's, an austere brick building, a dingy neon sign, belies the interior: a richly appointed supperclub straight out of the '30s. The speakeasy them is carried through to the menu, a nouveau americain supper club deal with beef tartare for 12.95 prepared at the table, Chicken Hash a la Bix for $19 and the obligatory cheeseburger up-do, in this case a 26 dollar Summer Truffle Cheese Burger. Owned by SF restaurateur "Bix" Beiderbecke, the speakeasy, the live nightly jazz and name all harken to the "real" Bix Beiderbeck, the legendary 1920's jazz trumpetist who drank himself into an early grave during Prohibition. Bix Restaurant is exactly the place where he probably would have liked to grow old, play trumpet and toss back some excellent Gin Gimlets.
