Ozwald Boateng's English Food in Paris

Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Parisian department store Printemps au Mode decided to promote this shopping season as a “British” one and threw in a whole lot of limey-flavored bells and whistles like a Harrods branch boutique and Bespoke, a temporary pub-styled restaurant that had its menu and décor created by fashion designer Ozwald Boateng.

A reader sent her review:

Rather simple, given it has been implanted in the middle of a
department store but the tones were purple and wood (quite rich
feeling) and the low cube stools were comfortable. Hanging lighting was quite elegant and dim enough to be cozy but along the edges (where we were sat) the whole atmosphere was rendered rather painful by the overhead projectors showing snippets of Boateng's shows very brightly on the plastic dividers that separated us from the
shopping area.

Tables were large enough to accomodate everything, including the large
vintage teapot. Glassware by Bodum (served as glasses and mini salad bowl), cutlery by
Christofle's low-end line (can't remember what it iscalled). I didn't get to flip the plates over to have a gawk.

The lounge area looked comfortable but it was occupied by Sean Connery and Elton John lookalikes while we were there, which cheapened the whole thing a wee bit.
Digital (plasma screen) fireplace a cute feature and keeping in with the bespoke theme, without being an inconvenience. Service was good, not overly present but there was always someone within signing distance.

Thanks Fiona!
