Germany Firm in Face of Anti-Fag Euro-Hysteria
The long-smoldering debate over smoking in public in the UK seems to be over, following a vote in Parliament last week that will ban Parliaments - and every other brand of fag, stogie and pipe - from enclosed public places in Britain by next summer. The vote, which was not unexpected, made the UK the last major European country to join the global anti-smoking crusade - save one. While even such legendary smokeasies as Spain and Italy are now, at least on paper, strict fag-free zones, according to this hopeful (at least if you are a wheezer) report from Deutsche Welle, Germany appears to be standing firm in the face of the widespread anti-smoking hysteria, even in such supposedly uncontroversial save-the-children areas as cigarette advertising. So if you're heading to Europe for a break, and find life without cigs a major drag, you'll now want to think about skipping London, Madrid and Rome, and heading straight to Berlin or Munich - or making sure you have more than just a round-trip plane ride's worth of Nicorette.
