NYC Free Bar Food

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

nyc%20free%20bar%20food%20new%20york.jpgBack during pre-Prohibition times, bars criticized for plying patrons with liquor on empty stomachs began offering snacks and lunches with the price of a drink. Today you can get all kinds of free snacks -- from pizza to hot dogs to BBQ -- for the price of a beer. Any Williamsburg hipster worth his American Apparel V-neck shirt knows about the free pizza at places like Capone's and Alligator Lounge, but the free food phenomenon has spread far and wide over the past couple years. Though snobbier friends will tell you any free food isn't worth eating, that point of view changes abruptly once the budget and the drunken grumbling stomach kick in.

Hank's Saloon

46 3rd Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217

Hank's, a home style country honky tonk, features live music nightly and free barbecue on Sundays and Mondays after 9 p.m. Even though you can't get their 'cue every night, and it will by no means compete with the snazzier BBQ halls of NYC, baby back ribs and fried chicken beats pizza and hot dogs every time in my book. Rudy's

627 9th Ave
New York, NY 10036

One of our rare picks on this side of the river, Rudy's offers free hot dogs to its sundry hip customers and old timey regulars. The Hell's Kitchen locale doesn't seem like a place for a fun hot spot, but the place packs in the west side revelers nightly. [link]

Levee

212 Berry St
Brooklyn, NY 11211

A friend who goes to this bar on North 3rd and Berry tells me it's a place to get "really housed quickly" because of their $5 beer and shot specials and general low prices. To combat the drunkenness, Levee hands out free cheeseballs, twizzlers, and lollipops. And, if a more serious hunger threatens, you can buy frito pies, baloney sandwiches, PB&Js, and chili cheese dogs. [link]

Lost & Found

113 Franklin St
Brooklyn, NY 11222

Offering a welcome change from the ubiquitous pizza, Greenpoint's Lost and Found plies their liquored up lovlies with free hot dogs, bagels, and veggie dogs. To keep you around they also have pool tables, skee ball, a photobooth, and video games. [link]

Trash Bar

256 Grand St
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Trash Bar, one of Williamsburg's favorite music venues, serves tater tots to stave off nausea and bleak hangovers. Smaller than a whole pizza, you'll feel much less guilty the next morning after pigging out in the middle of your bender, though the calorie count on these greaseballs is surely astronomical. [link]

Crocodile Lounge

325 E 14th St
New York, NY 10003

The Manhattan sister to Brooklyn's Alligator Lounge and Capone's, the Crocodile Lounge on 14th Street offers a pretty similar experience but with higher prices and less frenzied vibe. The free pizza won't win any culinary awards, but you didn't really expect it to. Further attractions include a photo booth and skee ball. [link]

Alligator Lounge

600 Metropolitan Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11211

One of the early pioneers to offer free pizza with beer, Alligator packs in the crowds nightly in the Lorimer stop section of Williamsburg. A pool table, the mixed crowd, and a pretty extensive beer selection offer further enticement, but the brick oven pizza brings the kiddies over from Bedford Ave. [link]
