New York's Top Lady Chefs

Friday, May 11, 2007

new%20york%20top%20female%20chefs.jpgRecently, restaurateur Keith McNally accused New York Times dining critic Frank Bruni of sexism, since Bruni has never given more than one star to a female chef. (McNally's feud with Bruni certainly had no root in Bruni's recent drubbing of McNally's Morandi restaurant.) Regardless of Bruni's alleged misogyny, chauvinism is a given in the professional kitchen, and accomplished chefettes are a statistically rare breed among leading restaurants. Still, there are a number of women running top-flight kitchens in New York -- Anne Burrell (formerly of E.U.), Katy Sparks (Quilty and Compass), and Sara Jenkins (Bread Tribeca and 50 Carmine) to name a few, though they're all (last we heard) between jobs at the moment. Fortunately for gender diversity enthusiasts, there are many other women actively cheffing in New York, and we have a list of the leading lights.

Nelly Godfrey @ Lima's Taste

122 Christopher St
New York, NY 10014
(212) 242-0010

Lima's Taste isn't a place we expect the New York Times to highlight anytime soon, but it's a great neighborhood spot for authentic Peruvian food. Chef Nelly Godfrey makes recipes learned from her grandmother's kitchen, like anticucho (skewered grilled cow's heart), ceviche, and lomo saltado (filet mignon, tomatoes, onions, and french fries sautéed together). Gabrielle Hamilton @ Prune

54 E 1st St New York, NY 10003 (212) 677-6221 [tags: new york, food, new york's top lady chefs, restaurants

Gabrielle Hamilton is almost categorically the first name people give when asked about successful female chefs in New York. Her excellent home-style restaurant Prune is consistently packed, and it's a serious scene at brunch. Her pasta kerchief with poached egg is just sublime, and she's managed all the success while keeping a young family intact. Hamilton also received a star from the New York Times' Frank Bruni in 2005. One of Park Slope's favorite restaurants, Ai Di La is run by Anna Klinger and her husband Emiliano Coppa. The institution gained two stars from the New York Times just last year, but has been considered one of the Slope's best restaurants for much longer. Highlights here include a tripe appetizer and ravioli with beets and ricotta. [link]

Julie Taras and Tasha Garcia Gibson @ The Little Giant

85 Orchard St
New York, NY 10002
(212) 226-5047

Our favorite little spot for brunch (though it's also a tasty and popular dinner place too) is owned and operated by two lovely and talented ladies. The restaurant earned a star from Frank Bruni in the New York Times, and we would give it the same. It's homey, hip, and delicious. [link]

Jodi Williams @ Morandi

211 Waverly Pl

(212) 627-7575

The focus of owner Keith McNally's indignation with New York Times critic Frank Bruni, Jody Williams ran the kitchen at our personal fave Il Buco as well as Gorgione and Gusto. Though Morandi has been experiencing some rough patches, and Williams may not be at the top of her game, she is a killer chef and has an excellent reputation. [link]
