Deconstructing Wagamama

Wednesday, February 8, 2006

wagamama.gifIn London, Asian noodle chain Wagamama is an inescapable presence. Wagamama has over 20 branches in the city and has become a staple in the life of many a Londoner with their tasty if bastardized Japanese/Chinese fare. The readers of Chowhound are enjoying a spirited deconstructing Wagamama in all its addictive glory. Replies to the thread bring up exactly the love ’em/hate ‘em feelings many Londoners have about the chain: communal seating, waiters taking orders via PDA, “food is fresh,” watered-down Asian cuisine, “hip and fun,” “foofy presentation,” “delicious” -- plus a fervently expressed wish from more than one poster that Wagamama open Stateside locations. Perhaps as a blueprint for a possible American expansion, chain founder Alan Yau was profiled in The Observer back in 2004 about his efforts at opening Hong Kong-style dim sum parlors in London.
