Forgotten Photographer on Display in Berlin

Monday, August 7, 2006

martin.jpgMartin Munkacsi isn't exactly a household name...anywhere. But during his time (the early to mid-20th century) he was the world's most famous fashion photographer. Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau presents a show of the "where is he now" genius (answer: dead). The name of the show, "Think While You Shoot" was the photogs guiding adage and probably a lesson still germaine today. The photos are drawn from Munkacsi's assignments in Berlin, Budapest and New York. After escaping the Nazis, Munkacsi fled to NYC where he took up a contact at Harper's Bazaar. His work there, of strong dynamic women, did much to change and enshrine the aesthetic of the Western female as a strong proud ballabusta.
