When thinkin' of drinkin' in South Beach, tourists mob the beachside cabanas and sidewalk cafes. Locals hit up the hotels. As big-city style hotels proliferate worldwide, so do their stylish nightlife components, and Miami is no exception. Classy drinks, cool crowds, and designy decor rule the day, especially at boutique and luxury hotels. They generally beat the crap out of any club on Ocean Drive or Washington Avenue, both in terms of patrons and service. As proof, here's our list of favorite SoBe hotel watering holes.
Gloria Estefan is expanding her empire. The singer already owns the Cardoza Hotel & Restaurant, as well as restaurants Bongos and Larios on the Beach in Miami. But, come this Monday, guests can shack up at the Estefan's latest hotel, Coasta D’este in Vero Beach. [Hotelchatter]
Airport security can now see under your clothes. The Transportation Security Administration “recently started using body scans on randomly chosen passengers in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Denver, Albuquerque and at New York’s Kennedy airport,” in what is “one of the biggest public uses of security devices that reveal intimate body parts.” Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas and Miami, you’re next! [USA Today]
Hotel Victor’s Evian bath still the “most expensive bath in the world.” For a cool $5,000, guests at the Miami hotel’s penthouse can indulge in an Evian water bath complete with champagne, foie gras, chocolates, smoked salmon lollipops, and, it seems, Serena Williams. [Hotel Chatter]

Last month Sarah Silverman and People magazine's sexiest man alive (this year) Matt Damon made a video for Jimmy Kimmel called "Fucking Matt Damon." Shot at the Delano Hotel in Miami, it features Silverman and Damon crooning about fucking one another "on the bed, on the floor, on a towel by the door, in the tub, in the car, up against the mini bar," exposing her infidelity to faux-boyfriend Kimmel. Now comes Kimmel's "plotted revenge," with more celebrity cameos than you can shake a stick at (Cameron Diaz and Robin Williams included). Ben Affleck plays Kimmel's lover, while Brad Pitt is a FedEx delivery boy. And, following suit with a hotel setting, the video features ample footage of the Hollywood Roosevelt's pool and rooms. American Airlines has a bit of a PR pickle on their hands. A woman on one of their flights died after being denied treatment en route from Port-au-Prince to New York. A flight attendant twice told her there were no oxygen tanks on board, and then produced a broken one after "other passengers aboard Flight 896 became agitated over the situation." The pilot agreed to divert to Miami to get her off the plane...but sadly, the woman died before that happened. And it gets weirder: the flight continued on to New York with the woman's body on the floor of the first-class section. And weirder still, I'm mostly shocked they bothered first class with this. [LA Times]
Tonight, as part of the Food Network's Wine & Food Festival, Miami's South Beach will play host to a Burger Bash, which will include 18 burger joints from all over the nation competing for the crown of the best burger. Over 1,600 attendees (who each paid a whopping $150 a ticket) will be running rampant, tasting burgers like the Shake Shack's Shackburger and local Bistro One LR's "Gruyere fondue, pretzel burger." The winner will be announced by none other than endorsement queen Rachael Ray. [NYT]
Last week we brought you LA's Celebrity-Owned Eateries, but this week we're looking down south for those restaurants run by stars of sport and the silver screen -- specifically, the celeb-owned establishments of Miami. With Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto scouting South Beach for restaurant locations, Miami's dining scene continues to heat up. And though former Miami eateries from the likes of Michael Caine and Cameron Diaz have fallen by the wayside, there are still plenty of places to get your A-list (or at least C-list) restaurant fix while in town.
