Where to Eat Crepes in Paris

Friday, August 1, 2008

where%20to%20eat%20crepes%20in%20paris.jpgFew things are as classically French, gastronomically speaking, as crêpes. While some love Brittany for its lighthouses, sailors, rocky beaches, and often rainy weather, it is perhaps most loved for having invented the oh so delicious crêpe and galette. Cheap, hearty crêpes are one of the few street foods you can find in stalls all around Paris, and the folks at Paris Crêpes have put together a map of their favorite stands at their website. But here's a list of Paris' best crêperies where you can sit back and enjoy a taste of Brittany without leaving town.

Chez Imogène

25, Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud
75011 11ème Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

This blue house of crêpes near Oberkampf has a knowingly rustic atmosphere, a charming staff, and tables around the open kitchen. At Chez Imogène, made-to-order crêpes and galettes are garnished with healthy ingredients like carrot purée and roquefort (and salted butter caramel for dessert). And there's traditional alcoholic cider and organic coffee to wash it down. [link]

Crêperie De Josselin

67, Rue du Montparnasse
75014 14ème Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

Considered by many to be Paris' best crêperie, Crêperie De Josselin in the 14th delivers the goods. Casual, rustic, crowded, friendly, the buckwheat galettes are huge and delicious. Try the crêpe maraichère filled with spinach, egg, lard, and cheese) or the crêpe josselin with egg, ham, cheese, and mushrooms. Or a simple sugar crêpe for dessert. Cash only. No reservations. La Crêpe Carrée

42, Rue Monge
75005 5ème Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

For the last 30 years, La Crêpe Carrée on rue Monge in the Latin Quarter has been serving inexpensive crêpes and buckwheat galettes in a convivial atmosphere. Take a seat on the terrace in nice weather, and try one of their delicious apple and quince jam-stuffed crêpes flambéed with Calvados. You can also take your crêpes to go. [link]

Ty Breiz

52, Boulevard Vaugirard 75015 Paris, France 01 43 20 83 72

The galettes and crêpes at Ty Breiz were named the best in the city in 2000. And the folks at this place, with its Breton decor and music, are still turning out delicious crêpes to a loyal following. The staff is not noted for its cheerful disposition, but the crêpe caramel au beurre salé for dessert will put a smile on your face. No reservations. Closed Sundays and Mondays. [link]

Ti Jos

30, Rue Delambre
75014 14ème Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

A well-known Breton pub and crêperie that's been around since 1937, Ti Jos is somewhat of a Breton cultural gathering place in Paris near the Gare Montparnasse. A lively pub atmosphere with occasional live music, and a large selection of hearty crêpes -- like the "complète" with egg, ham, and cheese or the "fermière" with bacon lardons, onions, and cream -- plus other regional specialties.
